Goethe’s story of Doppelganger is famous. Goethe reportedly experienced three doppelgangers in his life. One day when Goethe unilaterally declared the end of his engagement when he was 21 years old,he was suffering from regret and anguish. Goethe, who was in the carriage, saw a man who looked like him coming on horseback from the other side. No, it’s not similar, it’s the same as looking in a mirror. The difference was that he was dressed in gray with gold floating around. “In order to analyze such a strange experience,I couldn’t even think of the pain of a broken heart at that time,” he wrote in his later memoirs.
And eight years later,Goethe again saw the man who looked like him in the past on the same road, in the same place. At that time, however, Goethe was wearing the clothes the man wore eight years ago,and the man was wearing other clothes. Goethe said, “It was purely coincidence that I chose the clothes of the future,” he recalled. However, he said he had doubts about the man who looked just like him until the day he died.
It was when Goethe left his hometown of Frankfurt and stayed in Weimar. One evening, while Goethe was taking a walk, he ran into a familiar hometown friend. His friend was running around in Goethe’s slippers, wearing a gown and a sleeping hat. But that friend was someone who had to be in Frankfurt. Goethe tried to talk to the friend, but he disappeared far away. He came home wondering, but a friend he saw on the street was sleeping in the same shape. When he looked at the slippers, there was no sign of him going out. When he woke up his friend and asked him why, he said he wanted to see Goethe, so he came in the afternoon and slept at home all the time. However, he seemed to have walked around the town in a dream, but he was waiting for Goethe while sleeping.
I don’t know if Goethe saw his friend Doppelganger or if his friend was a sleepwalker, but this is the story of Doppelganger that Goethe experienced.
